Week 16 - FINAL CSA Newsletter 2014!

Good morning members!

We sincerely hope you have enjoyed eating our vegetables.  They are always a challenge to grow but it is our pleasure to feed your families year after year.

Your final share will contain the following:
  • garlic
  • carrots
  • beets
  • spinach
  • spicy greens
  • potatoes
  • 2 winter squashes - probably butternut and acorn
  • kohlrabi
  • broccoli
And hopefully radishes, if they are ready!

Your broccoli these last few pickups have been our best crop yet!  I've noticed little to no cabbage moth damage and the taste is wonderful.
The kohlrabi crop this season also did incredibly well - you will receive two final heads to grate into salads, chop into stews or soups or slice and serve with creamy veggie dip.
Your winter squashes will last for months so save them for a day in November or December when you're really missing the taste of fresh veg.  Warm up with a bowl of spicy squash soup, squash mac 'n cheese or squash pot stickers.  You can also peel, chop and freeze for another day.
Fresh and spicy squash soup recipe can be found here along with my favourite spaghetti dish, which can be served on a bed of spinach or better yet, arugula, if you have some left from last week.  Mix your spinach into your spicy greens if you find the mustard mix is too intense.  Grate raw beets into your salad for some colour and a boost of antioxidants.  The beets greens can also be added to your salad, as they too are in great shape and have not suffered from flea beetle damage.
Here are my chocolate beet cupcakes!  The icing is dyed with beets - no artificial colour!  I took out 1/2 the sugar from the cupcake mix and added chocolate chips - they were great.
Enjoy your last helping of organic potatoes as they are hard to find in our local grocery store.  You may have been overwhelmed by our bumper crop but I hope you made good use of the 23 pounds you received (weekly members!)
We thank you so much for being a part of the CSA and supporting our local sustainable business!  As promised, we made sure to give you 15% more than you would have received at the farmers' market for the price of the CSA share.  Please consider signing up with us again or come by the farmers' market to say hello!  Have a great fall, winter and spring and we'll see you next summer!
Happy cooking!
Team Luxy
