Week 9 - CSA Newsletter 2014

*Important note!!!!
Hello members!  On Wednesday, you received unwashed potatoes because we didn't have time to clean them for you (even though we were up at 6am!)  We put them in plastic bags to keep your shopping bags from getting dirty.  If you haven't removed them from the bags and washed them, I'd recommending doing so right away.  They should be kept in the fridge because they are new potatoes, not the cured storage kind.  Your garlic, however, is cured and will keep in a cool, dry and preferably dark place (pantry or cellar) until spring.  If you didn't have a chance yet to refrigerate or clean your potatoes, check for rot and we will replace damaged items.  This week will we start the harvest Tuesday (because we now know we can't get everything done on Wednesday) and will make sure you have washed potatoes.

Welcome to the second half of the CSA season; here come the fall crops!  You can expect the following veggies at your pickup next week:
  • potatoes
  • leeks
  • beets
  • beans
  • carrots
  • cucumbers
  • zucchinis
  • garlic
  • eggplants or cauliflower!
Potato leek soup is delicious with many different variations.  Here are a few:

Try my beet potato salad!  Also found on that page, my raw beet and quinoa salad.  Beet greens are also tasty and healthy so sauté them for an omelet or lasagna or chop them in ribbons for a salad.  I had a really tasty Beet greens smoothy yesterday!

Here are some more bean and potato recipes.  Please also refer to last week's newsletter for more green bean recipes.

The cucumber and zucchini plants are starting to slow down but you can expect a few more before they're done.  We hope you've enjoyed the bounty!  We are now selling garlic in bulk for winter storage.  You can order it from the web store or contact me directly.

Have a great weekend and happy cooking!
Team Luxy
