Week 6 - CSA Newsletter

Hello members,

Next week, you can expect the following vegetables:
  • Mint
  • Italian (aka Dinosaure) Kale
  • Zucchinis
  • Broccoli
  • Cucumbers
  • Red leaf lettuce
  • Red onions
  • Garlic
  • baby carrots!
It's our first time successfully growing mint in the garden, so we thought it would be nice for you to experience!  If you aren't interested in making yourself a nice rum Mojito, you can always try these 10 recipes that use fresh mint!

We are offering you a different variety of kale this week (last week was curly) which works well for making kale chips.  There are lots of kale and zucchini recipes in the recipe tabs across the top of the web page, particularly in 'week 1 & 2', 'week 3 & 4' and 'week 5 & 6'. Also check previous newsletters for more recipe ideas.

The broccoli you received last week was pretty strange looking.  The crop is late due to our late spring and now it's too hot for broccoli; it was starting to flower.  However, we still have a few more plantings that might do ok, since the nights are fairly cool.  Last week, I posted some broccoli recipes and here are more from one of my favourite chefs, Jamie Oliver!

Try one of these cucumber recipes I posted last week, in particular, this chilled cucumber, basil, mint soup.  Unfortunately, the basil did not work out for us but you'll find lots at the farmers' market, this time of year.

Your lettuce of the week is red leaf and as usual, you will receive onions and fresh garlic to flavour all of your creations!  The onions and garlic are bulbing out quite nicely; we plan on beginning (and hopefully finishing) the garlic harvest tomorrow!  It will be tied to the rafters in the barn and air dried for two weeks before it is ready to store until next spring!  We will be selling it by the pound once it has been cured.

Have a great weekend and happy cooking!
Team Luxy
